Bulk Antibiotics - General Overview

Ever since the discovery of penicillin in 1928, antibiotics have occupied a central position in humankind's continuing struggle with infectious bacterial diseases.

Today, a number of different antibiotic classes have been isolated, chemically modified and are used extensively by physicians in treating infectious diseases.  The large demand for antibiotics has led to bulk scale production with, in some cases, thousands of tonnes of material being manufactured at a single site.  As most traditional antibiotics were derived from yeast or bacteria, their large scale production is based on fermentation processes utilising up to 200m3 reactors. Modern cultures are capable of producing high concentrations of the antibiotic or starting material in an aqueous media.  These materials are often modified to give the wide array of different antibiotics prescribed around the world.

Rohm and Haas's involvement

Rohm and Haas has been intimately involved in the development of the recovery and purification of bulk antibiotics from as early as the 1940's when "AMBERLITE™ IR1" was considered for the purification of penicillin in the US.  Over the years, Rohm and Haas has built up an important expertise in helping customers optimise their processes; many of which depend upon the reliability of products such as AMBERLITE XAD™ adsorbents and AMBERLITE FP resins.
