Vancomycin
Vancomycin was first isolated in 1956 from a soil fungus. Today, it is a critical antibiotic and is used to treat Gram-positive bacteria which have become resistant to penicillin. Like some of the other antibiotics, it acts to inhibit the bacterial cell wall synthesis.
Vancomycin is an extremely powerful antibiotic and is general known as the "antibiotic of the last resort" due it's ability to treat resistant strains. However, in recent years, vancomycin resistant bacteria have appeared.
