One of the best recognised use of ion exchange resins as an excipient is the use of nicotine loaded onto AMBERLITE™ IRP64 to produce Nicotine Polacrilex USP.  The nicotine-resin complex (Nicotine resinate) is the principal ingredient of the nicotine chewing gums currently marketed by a variety of companies.  The original patent (GB 1,325,011) dates back to 1973 and was originally assigned to LEO Corporation. The nicotine is loaded to around 18% wt/wt.
